The Teach Pendant contains a mini keypad and an LCD display - as well as an emergency robot shutdown button that stops the robot in its tracks. This enables the user or carer to place the robot in various pre-programmed modes and also enables the status/health of the robot to be monitored for maintenance purposes. The pre-programmed modes are normally set at manufacture - but we can assign customised modes that are user specific. One of the features we will build into this system is to allow the user to ‘record’ and later ‘playback’ certain movements to carry out certain tasks that are either too fatiguing to keep doing or to playback repetitive boring tasks. For example - the user could guide the gripper at the end of the arm towards a cup - and then selecting a ‘pre-recorded’ motion when the cup is reached - finishes of the actual grasping of the cup automatically. The sensors attached to the gripper will also be programmed (transparent to the user) to enable the gripper motion to adapt to different size cups - for example. These modes & pre-recorded sequences can be initiated in several ways (pendant, programmed joystick buttons) - and the most user friendly method will be via the speech recognition system.
